Northen California, IAPAC to Hold Norouz Celebration

Sunday, March 9, 2008

San Francisco, CA - The Iranian American Political Action Committee (IAPAC) will hold its biannual Northern California Norouz celebration on March 9th, 2008. The event, entitled "Honoring the Contributions of Iranian Americans to American society," will recognize the accomplishments of Iranian Americans in the fields of arts and entertainment, community service, and government service.

IAPAC will honor Ms. Banafsheh Akhlaghi, Founder and President of the National Legal Sanctuary for Community Advancement, for her outstanding contributions to community service. The Honorable Susan Etezadi, California Superior Court Judge, will be presented an award for her contributions to government service. Ms. Rosie Malek-Yonan, actress, artists, director, author, and activist, will receive an award recognizing her excellence in the field of arts and entertainment.

Actor and comedian, Maziar "Maz" Jobrani, will preside as the Master of Ceremony. Distinguished guests include local, state, and federal dignitaries.

The event will be held at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in San Francisco, CA, with a reception at 4:00 PM followed by an award ceremony and dinner. The evening will provide guests the opportunity to not only visit with our esteemed honorees in a fairly intimate setting but also to learn more about the mission and accomplishments of IAPAC.

IAPAC is a registered bipartisan political action committee that contributes to candidates for public office who are attuned to the domestic concerns of the Iranian American community. IAPAC focuses exclusively on domestic policy issues such as civil rights and immigration, and it encourages Americans of Iranian descent to actively participate in civic affairs.

Over the past four years, IAPAC has: (i) facilitated briefings on Capitol Hill on the issues of civil liberty and immigration as they relate to the Iranian American community, (ii) worked with members of the House of Representatives to introduce a resolution declaring the Congress' condemnation of discrimination against Iranian Americans in any form, (iii) provided direct access for Iranian Americans to their elected representatives by holding a multitude of formal and informal events, and (iv) supported candidates for public office who are attuned to the interests of the Iranian American community.

London, Norouz Gala 2008

Saturday 15th March

Norouz, or the Old Persian Navasarda, literary meaning "the new day" is an ancient Iranian festival that celebrates rejuvenation of nature and marks the spirit of renewal at the precise moment when the Earth passes through the Vernal or Spring Equinox. Norouz is celebrated throughout the Near and Middle East, the Caucasus, in Central Asia, West of China, South Asia and many other regions of the world where Iranian, Kurdish or Parsi communities live.

Our Norouz today is distinctively an Iranian celebration that has embellished its ancient rituals with token borrowings from more recent traditions that shape the Iranian cultural identity.

The Zoroastrians of ancient Iran celebrated the creation of life by offering their god, Ahura Mazda, seven trays of gifts with symbolic items to signify the truth, justice, good thoughts, good deeds, integrity, opulence, munificence and immortality.

Norouz in essence celebrates the magic of life and acknowledges the balance of forces in nature, while mortals hope that the year ahead would be peaceful, devoid of illness and prosperous.

Loris Tjeknavorian
Suite from the opera Rostam and Sohrab (1985)

Ever since Western music was introduced to Iran in the mid-nineteenth century, Iranian composers have blended Western and Middle Eastern musical traditions. Due to the political turmoil of the past century, these works are often difficult to obtain and are thus rarely performed.

We'll devote the second half of our March concert to music from Persia, featuring classical pianist Tara Kamangar, who is currently at the Royal Academy of Music in London. She'll play the second piano concerto of celebrated Persian composer Aminollah Hossein, whose music is full of Persian melodies though he spent much of his life in exile.
Mezzo-soprano Raeeka Shehabi-Yaghmai will sing new arrangements by David Garner of Persian folk songs and melodies .

In our own blending of Western and Middle Eastern traditions, Ms. Kamangar will also perform Rachmaninoff's brilliant Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini on the first half of the program, and we'll open the program with Strauss' romantic tone poem for orchestra, Don Juan .

"Tara's expressive playing will speak to listeners of any nationality."
BBC Persian

"[Shehabi-Yaghmai has a] warm sound and charismatic stage presence."
