Japanese Music: Kitaro - Sand

Kitarō taught himself how to play guitar. He says of teaching himself, "I never had education in music, I just learned to trust my ears and my feelings." He gives credit for his creations to a power beyond himself. "This music is not from my mind," he said. "It is from heaven, going through my body and out my fingers through composing. Sometimes I wonder. I never practice. I don't read or write music, but my fingers move. I wonder, 'Who's song is this?' I write my songs, but they are not my songs.

Édith Piaf (1915— 1963) was a French singer and cultural icon who "is almost universally regarded as France's greatest popular singer." Her singing reflected her life, with her specialty being the ballads. Although she was denied a funeral mass by the Roman Catholic archbishop of Paris because of her lifestyle, her funeral procession drew tens of thousands of mourners onto the streets of Paris and the ceremony at the cemetery was attended by more than 100,000 fans.

Mercedes Sosa (born 1935) is an Argentine singer immensely popular throughout Latin America. She is best known as the voice of the "voiceless ones". Sosa and her first husband, Manuel Oscar Matus, were key players in the mid-60s nueva canción movement. Sosa is UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Latin America and the Caribbean. She has won the Latin Grammy Award for Best Folk Album in 2000 , 2003 and 2006.

Yusuf Islam best known by his former stage name Cat Stevens, is a British musician. He is a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, educator, philanthropist and prominent convert to Islam. As 'Cat Stevens', he has sold over 60 million albums around the world since the late 1960s. He has been given several awards for his work in promoting peace in the world, including the 2004 Man for Peace award and the 2007 Mediterranean Prize for Peace. In March 2006, Yusuf Islam finished recording his first all-new pop album since 1978 The album, An Other Cup. On CBS Sunday Morning in December 2006, Yusuf Islam said, "You know, the cup is there to be filled ... with whatever you want to fill it with..."
